yowee-ka-zowee!
Hello dear art lovers,
Here's a fun illo I did just for th' fun of it. Funny, huh? Pen and ink on Strathmore vellum bristol 300 series (the yellow pads). It was really fun inking this one! I've been using plate finish bristol for a long time now, but when I first started drawing and inking at the Kubert school I used vellum (or kid finish) bristol. It had a nice tooth to it, but it was murder on penpoints! Forget th' crowquills and small brass points! I broke and bent many a nib on that paper! I've used my trusty Hunt's Globepoint 513 for as many years and it really takes a beating! I always tried to used it like a brush and get a nice thick and thin line (although nobody can beat Walt Kelly's bee-yoo-ti-ful brushstrokes on Pogo). I used it more like the Hanna-Barbera comics inking. So anyways, after much verbal diarrhea, here you go...

My Pal Bill White
It is with extreme sadness that I have to write about my best friend, Bill White, in the past tense. He and I met at the Kubert School in lovely Dover, NJ way back in 1980. He was an insanely talented cartoonist, but more importantly, he was an naturally talented cartoonist. The "drawrings" (as he used to call them) just flowed out of his pencil in such an effortless way. He could draw anything, too. While I was hemming and hawing over some assignment, he would already be finished! There was nothing out of his comfort level. The way he was able to tackle any assignment or sketch was completely astounding to me. Every time he put pencil to paper, he taught me the bestest and easiest way to get the job done. I was lucky enough to collaborate with him on many projects, but the best thing we ever did together was "Kaptain Keen & Kompany" published by the now defunct Vortex Comics in Canada. We split each comic, Bill creating hilarious and animated stories featuring Kaptain Keen and Mooseboy and I drew my beer chugging Superswine stories. We would alternate pencilling and inking chores on each cover. That was a real treat! To be able to ink those goddamn wonderful "drawrings" of his!! We both loved Harvey Comics, Hanna-Barbera cartoons and anything that had to do with funny stuff and "bigfoot" cartooning, especially if it was done with great appeal and design. I will miss you, my friend, and think of you often. Rest in peace...

cigarette 1
I was looking at the blog of the fantastic cartoonist Jason and he did a series of sketches titled cigarette 1,2,3,4,etc. He commented on his April 17 post (Cigarette 6) "I don't even smoke, so I'm not sure why I'm drawing these characters, but anyway...". After I read that I really related to his comment. I always seem to draw these smoking animals, usually a dog, and I don't smoke. I actually don't like the smell of cigarettes. I hate when I'm walking to work and someone's smoking in front of me blowing their stinky smoke in my face. And don't get me started about these smokers who smoke right outside my office building entrance so you have to struggle through a pea soup of cigarette smoke to leave! Jeezus!!

Them Varmints!
When I was a wee lad, I was hooked on "Unk and Them Varmints" from CARtoons Magazine. The art was so fun and cartoony! I later found out they were drawn by Willie Ito and Mike Arens, who were both animation professionals. I know for sure that Willie worked at my favorite animation company, Hanna-Barbera! I'll bet Mike did, too!
