been a while...

My scanner's down, but I still wanted to post somethin' since it's been so long. Here's a couple of older pieces. Beatnik was done when I had a booth at the Licensing Show in NY. Obvious Gene Deitch influence. The surf dog was done for The Children's Place many years ago as a graphic t-shirt. The original was in color but here's the black and white linework. I think I used a black Prismacolor pencil instead of ink. You actually do get a nice rough line with the Pris. For the finished I might've even "streamlined" it in Illustrator. That's all for now...

sketchbook page

hey kids,
it's been a while posting. been trying to keep on with a sketchbook lately, due to rediscovering robert crumb and wanting to keep my hand in shape. most of my art at work is done using a mouse (never in a million years would i have thought this) and i want to keep my "pencil/inking" hand good. i've also been trying to not do any pencils, like crumb, and keep it spontaneous. not using a rapidograph, but an .03 micron pen. i love'em! this page started with the startled dog and prgressed from there, without any planning.

hellboy color pin-up

Way back in 2004, I did a illo of one of my favorite characters, Hellboy. I sent it off to my pals at Dark Horse and they used it for Hellboy Weird Tales #8. It was beautifully colored by Michelle Madsen. Can't wait for th' second HB movie!!

After I saw a cool lookin' ad in Juxtapoz for an urban clothing co., I figgered I'd do up an illo (or 2) and send'em off. After waitin' 30 days I emailed again figgerin' they weren't interested so I'm postin'em here!

Scram! Magazine cover sketch

While surfin' around th' innernet, I came across a cool lookin' mag called Scram! Cool cover illos and all sorts of stuff. So I mailed Kim a cover sketch idea and she liked it but unfortunately she's on hiatus with th' mag. So we both thought it would be good to post here an' at her site. So go to http://www.scrammagazine.com/garyfields and tell her I sent ya!
